Dean Landy is a visionary urban designer, architect, speaker, author, industry mentor, CEO, community advocate and social entrepreneur. He is responsible for some of Australia’s most progressive thinking in the field of urban planning and design.
Personally and professionally he’s driven by a desire to improve the quality of people’s lives by creating communities that are genuinely vibrant and sustainable – socially, economically and environmentally – within Australia and internationally.
Dean is a partner at ClarkeHopkinsClarke Architects, where he heads the urban design, mixed-use and retail team. Over 20 years he has led the creation of more than 100 commercial developments, from mixed use activity centres and masterplanned communities to new city developments for 80,000 future residents.
With regular collaborators Roberts Day, he’s at the forefront of Australia’s 20-minute neighbourhoods movement. Dean’s teams at ClarkeHopkinsClarke work with some of Australia’s most progressive clients on changing workplace design, community masterplanning and regenerative urban design.
Dean is author of Creating Vibrant Communities, inspired by two years of research and interviews with leading exponents across design, development and social research. It’s a landmark book offering industry a practical methodology for creating healthier, more liveable communities that are site-specific and ultimately self-sustaining.
Dean’s a committed industry mentor, volunteer and social entrepreneur. Since 1997 he’s been volunteering in developing nations. In 2007 he founded One Heart, a for-purpose foundation supporting 160 orphaned and vulnerable children in Kenya and Uganda through locally-led, contextually relevant grassroots organisations creating homes, schools, livelihoods and sustainable communities. In 2017, One Heart Village Kenya was highly commended in the World Architecture Festival Awards.
