The Future of Cities, the third instalment of Melbourne Connect’s The Future of series, was introduced as a dynamic exploration of the transformative forces that shape urban environments. With the global population projected to reach 9.8 billion by 2050—nearly 70% residing in cities, many in third-world circumstances—participants examined what lay ahead for urban landscapes.

Attendees uncovered sustainable solutions to the pressing challenges of urban living through cutting-edge insights and interdisciplinary research. As cities faced rapid population growth, energy shortages, environmental changes, new technologies, and unforeseen contingencies, envisioning the cities of tomorrow became more important than ever. The Future of Cities provided a comprehensive perspective on the evolving metropolis.

Moderated by Jon Faine, renowned broadcaster and writer, the event brought together researchers, industry leaders, and policymakers for a lively and forward-thinking dialogue on the complexities of urbanisation. By analysing historical trends and anticipating future challenges, they offered valuable insights into how cities and urbanites could thrive amidst instability and change.

The Future of series was presented in partnership with Lendlease.
