In November 2017, the University of Melbourne announced a partnership with a consortium led by Lendlease to develop a new innovation precinct on the former site of the Royal Women’s Hospital, located at the corner of Swanston and Grattan streets in Carlton.
Early works on site commenced on November 21, 2017 with hoardings installed around the perimeter of the building site. Planning approval was received on April 6, 2018, and construction is expected to start in mid-2018 for completion in 2020.
The University of Melbourne is committed to keeping the community informed on the development of the project. You will find regular updates on this page. For more information and enquiries, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
Notice of upcoming works
Updated: August 2018
We would like to provide you with the following construction update associated with works at the former Royal Women’s Hospital site.
We will continue our demolition works including slab and structural demolition with piling works to the north-east corner of the site. There will be an increase in noise and vibration during these works, however mitigation measures will be in place to minimise the impact to surrounding neighbours. We anticipate these works to be complete at the end of August, weather permitting.
To enable works to services, CitiPower will be disconnecting and removing the kiosk substation along the Grattan St boundary and activating the temporary power kiosk along Swanston Street. Undergrounding of the powerlines along Cardigan St are due to commence this fortnight and will be completed in approximately 3 weeks, subject to weather.
During these works, CitiPower will provide localised traffic management and divert pedestrians during the footpath closures, as required (see attached plans below for pedestrian diversions).
We apologise in advance for any disruption or inconvenience these works may cause.
We thank you for your cooperation and understanding while these important works are being carried out as we develop what will be Australia’s leading innovation precinct.
