Digital Mental Health Technology Hackathon

Did you know? If digital health technologies are not properly co-designed and tested with a diversity of population groups, they can have disastrous consequences for some patients. For example, recent reports suggest that due to lack of proper testing with racially diverse groups, pulse oximeters overestimate blood oxygen levels in people with darker skin tones, leading to worse health outcomes for them. Similar patient safety concerns exist for artificial intelligence-enhanced clinical tools and their suitability for minority groups.

The Digital Health Validitron at Melbourne Connect is holding an exciting hackathon event about the important emerging field of ‘digital health equity’ with a focus on digital mental health technologies. In this 1-day workshop, you will:

  • learn more about digital determinants of health
  • apply design frameworks and methods to create equity-aware mental health technologies
  • reflect upon your own role, personal beliefs, and unconscious biases and how they impact your understanding of your end-users
  • work in teams to create prototypes of your own digital mental health solutions
  • share your solution prototypes and get peer and expert feedback in a safe and appreciative environment

Your facilitators:

  • Dr Mahima Kalla: Digital Health Transformation Research Fellow, Digital Health Validitron, University of Melbourne
  • Dr Victoria Betton: Digital health and user-centred design specialist; co-founder of The Equity Charter, author and podcaster

Please note: this event will be held in-person at Digital Health Validitron, Melbourne Connect, 700 Swanston St, Carlton VIC 3053 .
