Clinical AI – The Art of the Possible with Associate Professor Peter A.D. Steel

Continuing with the CDTH Clinical AI - the art of the possible seminars on the translation of AI into the clinic, the Centre for Digital Transformation of Health is delighted to bring you the 6th seminar in the series!

The Centre for Digital Transformation of Health is delighted to have Associate Professor Peter A D Steel, MA, MBBS, Associate Professor for Clinical Emergency Medicine, New York-Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medicine as a visiting scholar for a week in Melbourne. During his visit, Associate Professor Steel will be presenting a seminar as part of the latest ‘Clinical AI – the art of the possible’ series deep diving into how ‘Not all Imperfections are Equal and the Safety-based framework for large language model clinical implementation.’

Associate Professor Steel will deep dive into if a large language model (LLM) technology can generate useful and safe hospital transitions-of-care notes. A partnership between a HealthTech start-up and an academic health system offers a unique pathway to LLM clinical implementation, placing value to the patient and the provider at the center of design and testing strategies. Using open-source models, a customised clinical LLM pipeline was created to generate automated handoff notes. Model performance was assessed with a novel patient safety evaluation framework to accompany traditional automated evaluation methods. Additional pre-implementation steps include real-time feasibility evaluations and designing EHR and clinical system integration.

If you’re interested in exploring the art of the possible in clinical AI further, join us online via Zoom or in-person at Melbourne Connect, 700 Swanston Street.
