ChatGPT: threat or opportunity? Perspectives from the coalface

This session will discuss the impact of ChatGPT in teaching, learning and assessment. In its own words “ChatGPT is a conversational AI language model developed by OpenAI. It uses deep learning techniques to generate human-like responses to text input, allowing for natural language communication with AI” (https://chat.openai.com). The recent media attention has raise more questions than answers for university teaching.

To what extent willChatGPT change teaching, learning and assessment as we know it? Can we monitor it using more AI tools, or is it something that should be incorporated into our teaching, learning and assessment, like many other tools and programs? And what about academic integrity issues?

Join us for a CSHE hosted panel discussion where four academics from different faculties across the University of Melbourne will share their perspectives.

Chair: Thomas Cochrane, Melbourne Centre for the Study of Higher Education (CSHE)

Panel:

  • Professor Julie Clarke, Melbourne Law School
  • Dr Eduardo Oliveria, Faculty of Engineering and IT
  • Professor Melanie Plesch, Faculty of Fine Arts and Music
  • Associate Professor Charles Sevigny, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences
